Winelands SPCA was formed in August 2004 as a result of the amalgamation of Montagu and Ashton SPCA, Robertson SPCA and McGregor SPCA. The municipalities of the area had amalgamated into the Breede River Winelands Municipality and found it difficult to deal with three different SPCAs. In theory, bigger is supposed to be better! In fact Winelands SPCA now covers a very large area with a small staff and band of volunteers, and is stretched to its limit to meet the demands made on the society.

Are in Ashton and include our kennels and cattery for animals seeking new homes and a clinic for primary health care and sterilising of pets from indigent communities. We can also accommodate and welcome educational visits from schools or adult groups.
| Smokey, in charge of Everything Smokey arrived at our rented premises in Montagu some years ago. She was christened by the Grade 1 class of Kings Christian School. She has appointed herself VIC – Very Important Cat. She made the move to Ashton with the minimum of trauma and rules her roost with an iron paw. |
Bobtail – spent a long time in the cattery, continually overlooked by potential owners, until he explained to our Inspector that he felt he could play a meaningful role in the office, and that is now his domain. |
| Jimmy and Teddy of the Cuddles Dept Jimmy and Teddy – came to the Ashton kennels when they were being built. They both said they were happy and did not really wish to be adopted. Between them they keep the wagtails up in the air and the moles firmly underground |
Helga – is the newest member of staff. She was found abandoned near the Ashton/Swellendam road, in a very poor state. With love and patience she is coming out of her shell and manages to look very fierce if she thinks an intruder is at the gate. |
